Tree Care & Info

JENKS PROVIDE A GENERAL TREE CARE SERVICE TO ENSURE THAT YOUR TREES REMAIN HEALTHY AND ATTRACTIVE. WE ARE ALSO HAPPY TO PROVIDE ADVICE ON HOW YOU CAN CARE FOR YOUR TREES YOURSELF.

General Care

We offer the following services:
  • Removal of Climbing Plants - Climbing plants such as Ivy, Clematis, Honeysuckle and Russian Vine, although they cause no real damage to the support tree, can provide increased resistance to wind which may result in the tree fracturing. Climbing plants can also suppress the internal secondary growth and will sometimes overtake the host tree especially yew trees, thus limiting photosynthetic uptake. This is usually a problem with small trees of less than 10m tall.
  • Bracing - Caution should be exercised in the use of bracing. With our expert evaluation we can compare the effectiveness of bracing with possible alternatives, in order to arrive at the best and safest remedial treatment. With our experience we will be able to evaluate whether the introduction of artificial support into a tree can extend the tree’s safe life and/or lessen the damage done should the supported part collapse.
  • Water Pockets and Cavities - When cavities in trees are not filled with water, then rubbish and soft rotten wood can cause wood-rotting fungi. We also check for any wildlife that may be having a detrimental effect on the tree.

Tree Preservation Orders (TPO)

In both Berkshire and Oxfordshire and particularly within Oxford we have a high number of trees with tree preservation orders, or TPO, on them as well as many different and exotic tree species.

To work on a tree with a Tree Preservation Order, or TPO, there has to be a valid arboricultural reason for carrying out the works. This has to be submitted to the local authority planning department or forestry officer or tree officer on a form produced for this purpose.

Whether your trees are covered by a TPO or are within a conservation area you do need to go through the procedures outlined by your local planning authority to avoid the penalties associated with pruning or felling protected trees. Felling a tree covered by a TPO without consent can attract a fine of £20,000 plus the cost for replacement, which for a large tree can dwarf the fine.

Getting sound advice is very important. For details of the tree officers within Oxford, Oxfordshire and Berkshire type your local authority into your search engine and go to the planning section. All of the local authority websites have clear signposts and downloadable Tree Preservation Order and Conservation Area application forms.
